What is
a Customs Broker? The Customs Broker is a highly
trained trade professional. Licensed by the U.S.
Department of the Treasury, the Customs Broker
must possess thorough knowledge of tariff schedules
and Customs regulations and is well informed
of amendments made through constant changes in
law and administrative regulations. Customs Brokers
are private individuals or companies who provide
assistance to importers. The Customs Broker must
be well-versed in determining proper classifications
and dutiable value and be fully aware of the
vast number of commodities subject to quotas,
antidumping duties, countervailing duties, special
programs that allow reduced duty on selected
imported merchandise, etc.
The Customs Broker’s operations often transcend
U. S. Customs, calling for contact with more
than 60 other government agencies, such as the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (meat), the Environmental
Protection Agency (vehicle emission standards)
or the Food and Drug Administration (product
safety).
