Two
years after Congress passed the Trade Act of
2002 and more than a year after Customs and
Border Protection (CBP) floated – and then
shelved – its highly controversial “strawman”
trial balloon, Advance Electronic Cargo Information
(AECI) is now the law of the land.
The
intent of AECI is to provide CBP with electronic
cargo data prior to arrival in order to improve
its ability to screen and target shipments
for potential contraband and/or terrorist threats.
