WWII Veterans’delegation to honour Canadians in Sicily, Italy
Re-enactment of Battle for Assoro among itinerary highlights

Fort Erie, Ontario –September 6, 2005 –Later this month, PBB Global Logistics’Corporate Travel service will be coordinating a 7-day delegation from the Hastings and Prince Edwards Regiment as it visits a number of historical battlefields in Italy.  The group –which includes a number of WWII veterans –will be commemorating Canada’s efforts in the invasion of Fortress Europe between 1943 and 1945.

The 110-strong delegation will include 58 active members of the armed forces, 15 veterans of the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, regimental dignitaries and family members.

Between September 17 and September 23, the delegation will visit and conduct commemoration ceremonies at key Second World War battlefields including Assoro, Agira and Pachino in Sicily, and Moro River in the Italian mainland, where some of the fiercest fighting of the war took place.  In Assoro, Canadian soldiers will re-enact the “Hasty P’s”(the Regiment’s popular nickname) daring nighttime assent of the 3,600 foot escarpment, which hastened the capture of Assoro on July 22, 1943.

“ The heroic performance of our troops in Sicily and Italy is the stuff of legend in our Regiment,”says Lieutenant Colonel R.C.  (Ray)  McGill, CD, Commanding Officer of the Hastings and Prince Edwards Regiment.  “We are truly honoured to be accompanied by a sizeable contingent of veterans to join us in this commemorative venture.”

PBB Corporate Travel’s past involvement with regimental events –such as its annual Garrison Ball –was a key reason for being selected to manage the delegation’s travel arrangements.  PBB Corporate Travel will oversee all travel details for the delegation, including booking overseas flights, scouting hotel facilities, and arranging bus transportation and meals. It is also involved in securing a number of corporate sponsors to help defray some of the costs of the event.

“ It is a real privilege to be involved in this delegation,”says Josephine Boyle, Director, PBB Corporate Travel. “We have considerable experience in coordinating special events, trade missions and other corporate functions.  But this stands out as a unique opportunity to assist in an event of such historical significance, and to thank our veterans for their valiant service.”

Contributions from the public are appreciated to help veterans and serving soldiers cover the costs of the event.
