Overview
The
FDA is a division of the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services that is responsible
for ensuring that foods are safe, wholesome
and sanitary. Its responsibilities include
assuring the safety and security of human and
veterinary drugs, biological products, medical
devices, the nation’s food supply, cosmetics
and products that emit radiation. As the primary
authority over food in the U.S., the FDA defines
“food” “articles for food or drink for man
or other animals… chewing gum… and other articles.”
The FDA has provided examples of food among
which are fruits, vegetables, raw agricultural
commodities for use as food or as components
of food, food and feed ingredients, food and
feed additives, infant formula, dietary supplements,
live food animals and canned goods.
